Description

Amager Double Black Mash (2026) Maple Syrup

General Info

  • Brewery Name: Amager Bryghus
  • Brewery Location: Kastrup (Amager), Denmark 🇩🇰
  • Beer Name: Double Black Mash (2026) Maple Syrup
  • Beer Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
  • ABV: Not explicitly stated (but this is their heaviest beer, expect 12%+).
  • Specs: Aged in oak ex-bourbon barrels that previously held maple syrup.

Description The second barrel-aged variant of the iconic 2026 Double Black Mash is perhaps even more unusual than its Madeira sibling. For this edition, the massive Imperial Stout was aged in oak barrels that previously contained Canadian maple syrup. Often, these are original American bourbon or whiskey barrels (made of American white oak) that were first used to give the syrup extra complexity and vanilla notes, and then utilized by the brewers at Amager. The result is a fabulous encounter between roasted malt and liquid gold.

Taste Description The beer pours like pitch-black, opaque motor oil with a mocha-colored head. As soon as you smell it, an astonishing, dessert-like aroma steps out of the glass: heavy notes of vanilla, caramel, roasted wood, and a typical hint of 'pancake syrup', beautifully supported by the coffee and chocolate notes of the stout. On the palate, the beer is extremely full, round, and 'chewy'. You taste caramelized sugar, light coconut, a hint of smoke, and tannins from the oak. Although the actual residual sugar from the barrel is minimal, the incredible aromas make the beer feel unimaginably sweet, lush, and dessert-like. A light, nutty, toasted flavor perfectly enhances the dark core of the stout.

Food Pairing A massive, complex Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with distinct notes of maple syrup and bourbon barrels demands the ultimate comfort food combinations:

  • Dish: Amazing at a hearty weekend brunch or as a conclusion to a BBQ. Think of chicken and waffles with bacon and syrup, or slow-cooked pork belly with a maple glaze.
  • Dessert/Sweet: The ultimate companion for fresh, warm pancakes or waffles, sticky pecan pie, or simply alongside a scoop of artisanal vanilla ice cream where you pour a small splash of the beer over the ice cream.
  • Cheese: Aged, salty, crumbly cheeses or a robust, smoky Cheddar provide an unparalleled savory contrast to the syrupy, vanilla-like sweetness of the beer.
