Description

Amager Double Black Mash (2026) Madeira

General Info

  • Brewery Name: Amager Bryghus
  • Brewery Location: Kastrup (Amager), Denmark 🇩🇰
  • Beer Name: Double Black Mash (2026) Madeira
  • Beer Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
  • ABV: Not explicitly stated (but undoubtedly a massive heavyweight!)
  • Specs: Aged for 10 months in Portuguese Madeira casks (a complex, sweet fortified dessert wine).

Description While Amager Bryghus normally harbors a deep love for American whiskey barrels, they take a completely new, elegant path with the Double Black Mash (2026) Madeira. Their heaviest and rawest Imperial Stout rested for 10 months in oak casks that previously held the sweet, fortified Madeira wine from the Atlantic islands of the same name. The result is a brilliant transformation: the brutal, roasted stout is 'tamed' by the barrel and turned into a lush, liquid 'adult dessert'.

Taste Description The beer pours like pitch-black, thick syrup. Where the original version is relentlessly roasted, the Madeira cask provides an unprecedented depth and smoothness. In the nose and palate, a rich bouquet of dried fruit explodes: figs, sweet prunes, dates, raisins, and dark cherries. This melts flawlessly with intense notes of caramel, melted sugar, and toffee. The characteristic slight oxidation of the Madeira wine gives the beer a nutty, port-like sweetness. In the background, the soft oak provides hints of vanilla, while mellowing the sharp alcohol warmth into a creamy, velvety, and voluptuous mouthfeel.

Food Pairing A complex, fruity, and sweet Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with distinct port and dessert wine characteristics is the absolute pinnacle after a good dinner:

  • Pure enjoyment: This is the quintessential beer to treat like a luxury cognac or port. Pour it into a tulip glass, let it warm slightly, and sip it in total peace.
  • Dessert/Sweet: The ultimate match with dark chocolate (with or without dried fruit or nuts), a rich sticky toffee pudding, or dark cherry pastry. Note: the beer itself already brings a lot of sweetness, so avoid overly cloying desserts.
  • Cheese: Classic 'port cheeses'. A sharp, salty Blue Stilton or a very aged, crumbly chunk of cheese cuts masterfully through the thick, fruity sweetness of the Madeira.
